Sentiero Italia: Discover Italy's Great Alpine & Apennine Trail

01 July 2026

Embark on an unforgettable journey: Exploring Italy's unique landscapes along the Sentiero Italia

When we think of multi-day treks, our minds often wander to faraway lands like Nepal or Patagonia, or perhaps European destinations such as Spain for the Camino de Santiago. Yet, we often overlook the incredible wealth of unique treks right here at home, offering such a wide range of difficulties and diverse landscapes that there's something to captivate every explorer.

Indeed, Italy, with its majestic Alps and Apennine Mountains, boasts an impressive network of trails, routes, refuges, and support structures for anyone eager to discover the beauty of these ranges. There's one particular trail that unites all our mountains and hills into a single, grand journey: it's called the Sentiero Italia (Italy Trail). It was born in 1983 from the vision of a group of journalists and writers who later formed the Associazione Sentiero Italia. After years of meticulous preparation by dedicated volunteers, the trail was inaugurated in 1995 with the 'CamminaItalia' operation. Not long after, however, the path was left to itself, allowing nature to reclaim parts of its route.

This is a hiking route totaling approximately 6,880 km, traversing both of Italy's mountain spines, the Alps and the Apennines. With an astonishing 350,000 meters of positive elevation gain, it spans around 368 stages! In 2018, the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) stepped forward to revitalize the trail, aiming to restore its route. In agreement with the Sentiero's founders, the Sentiero Italia CAI project was launched. We are truly delighted by this renewed activism: the Sentiero Italia is indeed one of the longest trekking routes in the world, possibly even *the* longest, a fact recognized by prominent international news outlets.

Sentiero Italia - Trekking Journeys in Italy

It represents an enormous heritage for our country: imagine the significance a route like this could hold in terms of tourism. Everyone would benefit, especially local communities. This is a vital opportunity to showcase another stunning facet of Italy – its landscapes and natural beauty – which sometimes takes a backseat to its historical and cultural treasures. It's also a chance to foster slow tourism, bringing people closer to areas and communities often marginalized economically due to their geographical 'distance' from major urban centers.

You might easily come across sections of this trail during your day trips and excursions: to recognize it, simply look for the red-white-red markers bearing the inscription SI CAI in black. Many parts of the Sentiero Italia indeed overlap with other existing routes, notably the Grande Traversata delle Alpi in Piedmont, the Alta via dei Monti Liguri in Liguria, the Grande Escursione Appenninica in Tuscany, and the Sentiero del Brigante in Calabria.

Just imagining the sheer beauty of the places you can visit along this path is enough to lose yourself in wonder: from the imposing Dolomite peaks and majestic glaciers of the Western Alps, the journey continues through softer landscapes amidst Tuscan vineyards, then descends to coastal cliffs overlooking a dreamlike sea on the Amalfi Coast, all the way to the rugged and arid slopes of Calabria. Imagine how much history, culture, and nature you can breathe in on a journey like this!

On the official website (https://sentieroitalia.cai.it/), you'll find all the relevant information. We've highlighted it because, all things considered, it's still a relatively unknown project. Everyone should know about it, even those not passionate about hiking and mountains, as it's a project for all of Italy, laying new foundations for a different kind of tourism – slow-paced and closer to nature. It's an outdoor tourism approach that Verticalife has always passionately supported and promoted!
