Sleeping in a Tent: A Million-Star Hotel Experience

20 May 2021

Everything you need to know for a night under the stars in a tent: practical tips and ideas for an unforgettable experience in nature.

Hotels fully booked and prices sky-high—this is a common scenario many of us have faced recently when planning a weekend getaway. But we have an alternative, perhaps the best for those wanting to connect with nature or explore remote locations: camping in a tent!

Staying in a 5-star hotel is for everyone (budget permitting), but staying in a million-star hotel in the heart of wild nature is for those seeking emotions that are hard to find elsewhere. Plus, it’s almost free once you have the right gear.
Organizing a camping trip—be it solo or with friends—is a ritual with several stages, all aimed at one goal: to experience a profound connection with nature, far from the trappings of civilization and our hyper-connected world.

Finding the Perfect Spot

The first step is choosing a suitable location, not just geographically but also in compliance with local regulations. In Italy, there isn’t a unified national law governing wild camping, so it’s essential to check local rules before heading out with a packed backpack. It’s often more accurate to speak of overnight bivouacking rather than camping, as the focus is on spending a single night in nature, away from designated campsites.

For example, in Piedmont, wild camping is allowed for up to two days, provided it’s away from authorized campsites, but you must notify the local mayor 24 hours in advance. In Valle d’Aosta, wild camping is permitted only above 2,500 meters, from sunset to sunrise. Near refuges or in protected areas like the Gran Paradiso National Park, it’s strictly prohibited. Elsewhere in Italy, contact the local municipalities for precise rules.

Preparations

Once you’ve chosen your spot, proper preparation is crucial. A small oversight can turn into a significant inconvenience during your trip. The golden rule here is common sense: if you’ve never camped before, seek advice from experienced friends, guides, or reliable outdoor resources.

Key considerations include:

  • Temperature: Nights can get chilly, especially in the mountains, with temperatures dropping significantly compared to daytime. A high-quality sleeping bag and appropriate clothing are essential. Verify that your sleeping bag is rated for the expected temperatures. Also, choose a tent that is weather-resistant, as mountain weather can change unexpectedly.

  • Staying Dry: A waterproof tarp for the tent floor can help keep moisture from seeping in. Even if the forecast looks clear, unexpected rainstorms can occur.

  • Food and Water: Bring sufficient food for your trip and at least 2.5 liters of water per person for a single night. If you plan to camp for multiple nights or in remote areas, consider water purification tablets or boil water from streams with a portable stove.

Other essentials include a headlamp, a first-aid kit, a power bank (devices discharge faster in cold temperatures), and a waste bag to leave the area as you found it.

The Experience

The final phase: the actual camping trip! If you’ve followed the advice above, you’re already set for success. From here, it’s all about your sense of adventure. Customize your experience with the elements that matter most to you.

Above all, respect the environment. If you plan to light a fire, ensure it’s permitted and know how to do it safely. Leave no trace—pack out all your trash. Be mindful of wildlife and practice appropriate behavior: camping isn’t an excuse for a party. Remember, nature is everyone’s home, not just ours.

Don’t let these guidelines intimidate you—planning a camping trip is simpler than it seems. Once organized, you’ll enjoy an experience that connects you to nature in a way few other activities can. After all, nature is our first and truest home!
