Climbing on Crags: Where to Start

11 October 2019

Discover the first steps to approach crag climbing, from essential gear to tips for starting safely.

"I’d love to try, but I don’t know who to go with."
This is the most common dilemma among those who want to dive into the world of climbing but have no idea how to start. Some mountain outdoor activities are easier to approach—for example, trekking due to its simplicity, or skiing and ski mountaineering because of the availability of professionals and associations to guide beginners.

Climbing, however, is a bit different. The safety aspect is more prominent and can intimidate those eager to try but unsure where to begin. Moreover, climbing requires specific equipment—ropes, harnesses, quickdraws, carabiners, climbing shoes—which isn’t always readily available at generic sports stores and is even harder to rent.

For this reason, it’s crucial to rely on experienced climbers or certified professionals for your first climbing experience. They can teach you the basics of safety and movement on rock while providing all the necessary equipment.

We’ve decided to include weekend outings in our activity calendar with a rock climbing course held by Alpine Guides at crags. While indoor climbing gyms offer a simpler, safer way to try climbing independently, crag climbing retains a timeless allure.

Rock climbing tips for beginners

Tying into the rope, belaying the lead climber opening the route, and feeling the thrill of gripping bare rock with your hands as you climb higher—these are all experiences you must live through to decide if climbing is the outdoor activity for you. Indoor climbing is great for staying in shape year-round or when logistical challenges prevent you from reaching outdoor crags or finding a climbing partner.

But crag climbing offers unique emotions that only come from being immersed in nature and practicing an outdoor sport. Autumn makes it even more special—warm afternoons, nature’s stunning colors, and distant peaks already dusted with snow visible from the walls. Every climb unveils breathtaking mountain views worthy of framing!

We understand that a single weekend might not be enough for beginners to gain complete confidence and autonomy in crag climbing. However, it’s an excellent way to have your first experience with guidance from certified Alpine Guides. Trusting experts with the proper teaching credentials is rule number one! It’s also a chance to meet like-minded individuals and form groups for future outings. Climbing, after all, is a sport that brings people together.

We’re confident that nature and mountain enthusiasts will fall in love with climbing too!
