Clothing and Equipment for a Trekking Tour

11 July 2022

Our tips on what clothing and equipment to bring for a trekking tour or excursion.

The following list is based on years of experience from our staff practicing our activities. We hope it will help you pack your backpack and make any necessary purchases before departure.
This list includes clothing, gear, and materials required to participate in our tours.
If you don’t have everything on this list, let the guide accompanying you or our office know, so we can find a solution together before departure—allowing you to simply enjoy the excursion!

Basic Clothing and Equipment

For day hikes and multi-day tours:

  • 25–30L backpack (with rain cover)
  • Trekking shoes with good soles and waterproofing, preferably with ankle support
  • Compact down jacket
  • Long hiking pants, preferably convertible
  • Short or long thermal leggings (for cold and/or windy conditions)
  • Windproof fleece jacket ("soft shell")
  • 2 t-shirts (we recommend merino wool for quick drying)
  • Long-sleeved thermal shirt (we recommend merino wool)
  • Socks (warm or light, depending on the season)
  • Scarf or neck warmer
  • Warm hat
  • Cap or bandana (like Buff)
  • Sunglasses
  • Warm gloves
  • Water bottle (minimum 0.75L; consider an extra bottle for hot weather)
  • Snacks (we recommend dried fruits, nuts, and chocolate)
  • First aid kit (bandages, plasters, tape, disinfectant, latex gloves, thermal blanket)
  • Headlamp
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Multi-tool knife (if you have one)
  • Carabiners and cords (if you have them, useful for attaching extra gear or for emergency fixes)
  • Trash bag
  • Tissues and/or wet wipes
  • Duct tape (handy for quick, effective repairs for shoes or clothing tea

For Rainy Conditions

For day hikes when rain is expected and always recommended for multi-day tours, as the weather can change rapidly.
If unsure about your shoes' waterproofing, test them on rainy days or use a waterproofing spray you can bring on the hike.

  • Waterproof jacket with hood (also called "shell" or "hard-shell")
  • Waterproof over-pants (those with full-length side zippers are easier to put on)
  • Waterproof gloves (we recommend merino wool liners + Gore-Tex over-gloves)
  • Gaiters (even short ones, but ensure they cover over-pants and shoes to keep water out)
  • Cap with rigid brim (useful for walking against the wind, as it gets wet but keeps your head up)
  • Waterproof backpack cover

Clothing and equipment for snow hikes

  • Trekking poles with snow baskets and tips
  • Crampons
  • Gaiters
  • Snowshoes (if rented through us, they will be provided by the guide at the meeting point)

Extras or Variations for Multi-Day Hikes

To optimize space and weight, we suggest keeping a change of clothes for the evening (pants, shirt, underwear, socks) to wear after showering.
You can wash the shirt, underwear, and socks you used during the day and reuse them the next day (consider drying times carefully).
With all clothing and gear, your backpack should weigh between 7–10 kg.

  • 35–40L backpack (with rain cover)
  • Extra t-shirt
  • Extra underwear
  • Extra socks
  • Extra snacks
  • Long, comfortable pants for the evening (not bulky)
  • Clothing bags
  • Towel (microfiber recommended)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Sponge and soap (for personal and clothing use)
  • ID card

Additional items, such as:

  • Phone and/or camera charger
  • A nice book (an e-reader saves weight)
  • Packable backpack for evening or short outings near the hotel/mountain hut

For overnight stays in mountain huts

  • Sleeping bag liner (mandatory, usually purchasable at the hut)
  • Earplugs or sleep mask
  • Cash for extras at the hut
